Wool Socks in Winter: What Actually Keeps Your Feet Warm

There is a moment every winter where you realise your socks are not doing their job. Feet cold, boots damp, and you can't tell whether the problem is the socks, the shoes or you. Usually it's the socks — and usually it's the wrong fibre rather than the wrong thickness.

Thicker is not automatically warmer

Warmth comes from trapped air, not bulk. A thick sock that compresses inside a tight boot insulates worse than a thinner sock with loft and room to breathe. If your boots are already snug, a thinner wool sock will keep you warmer than a chunky one crammed in.

This is the single most common mistake. Before buying thicker socks, check whether your current pair is being squashed flat.

What the fibres actually do

Merino wool is the all-rounder. It insulates when damp, resists odour, and doesn't itch the way coarse wool does. It's the fibre worth paying for if you're outdoors — our merino outdoor socks are cut for hiking and cold-weather walking.

Rabbit wool and cashmere blends are softer and warmer per gram, but less durable. These are indoor and light-outdoor socks — beautiful, not built for hiking.

Acrylic holds shape and colour well and costs less, but it doesn't manage moisture. Fine for a dry commute, poor for a long day on your feet.

Fleece-lined socks trap a lot of air and are genuinely the warmest option for sitting still — at a desk, in a cold house, on a long journey.

Length matters more than people expect

A sock that ends below your boot line leaves a gap where cold air moves in and the boot rubs directly on skin. Knee-high and over-the-knee socks solve both problems at once, which is why they've stayed in fashion for so long.

For the house, a slipper sock with a non-slip sole beats a normal sock on cold floors — and is safer on stairs.

How to make them last

Wool socks fail at the heel and toe, almost always from machine drying. Wash cool, dry flat, and they'll outlast three pairs of cheap acrylic. Turning them inside out before washing helps too — most of the abrasion happens on the inside face.

Building a small, sensible rotation

You don't need many. Two pairs of merino for outdoors, two pairs of thick fleece-lined for home, and one pair of knee-highs to wear under winter boots will cover an entire season comfortably.
